Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun) is one of the many coolies who illegally cut red sandalwood in Seshachalam and sell it by kilogram to Powers. In a syndicate with multiple players, Pushpa slowly finds her footing and learns to rise through the ranks until the one who will once trim these trees becomes the one giving orders. However, his Achilles heel is not his lady love Srivali (Rashmika Mandana), or big wigs Konda Reddy (Ajay Ghosh), Jolly Reddy (Dhananjay), Mangalam Srinu (Sunil) and his wife Dakshayani (Anasuya Bharadwaj). It's the fact that he doesn't let his brother (Ajay) claim his family tree, takes Pushpa from zero to a hundred in no time, and often also becomes this laid-back, humorous, arrogant, funny person that becomes the reason he loses his cool.

 

Pushpa: The Rise is underpinned by a story often explored in cinema - the rise of the underdog. So Sukumar really has nothing new to discover here. What's new is how she chooses to expand the story and spend time setting up Pushpa's character for an entire three-hour film before getting into the thick of things. And this movie might not really sit well with everyone because, despite all the hype, that's essentially what it is. Pushpa may make a lot of enemies, but none of them seem to match her unencumbered nature until Shekhawat comes to town

Sticking to the story, Sukumar's film does well as it focuses on the neat smuggling of Red Sanders and Pushpa's contribution to smooth things over. Where the film breaks down is when it tries to establish a strange (and problematic) romance between him and Shrivali, which doesn't always work or contribute to the larger story at hand. Sure, Pushpa gets a chance to be his knight in shining armor, but that seems to take the story in the direction it was going to go anyway. Even the final confrontation between Pushpa and Shehwat did not have the desired effect as it was rushed and the latter's character was seemingly undercut.

There is also little VFX, art direction, editing, and sound design in certain scenes. The team of Pushpa: The Rise has not hidden the fact that they had to rush the release of the film on time. Given the already unreasonable runtime, technical glitches make the shortcomings even more pronounced. Where Pushpa: The Rise shines is often when it comes to casting, direction, cinematography, costumes and music. Sure, Devi Sri Prasad's BGM sounds underworld at times but her music makes up for it as it suits the story well

 

Pushpa: The Rise - Movie Review: 

Cinematographer Miroslav Kuba Brozek and director Sukumar seem to have found the perfect groove for this film, and their work complemented each other. Pushpa's character's costumes are seen to undergo a change depending on her position in this world. The supporting cast also gets a chance to shine, even if they sometimes falter in playing non-cookie-cutter characters. In a testosterone-heavy film, Rashmika also seems to be at a disadvantage. On the other hand, Anasuya gets a scene with Sunil which proves that she is a fit person in this world. Samantha's cameo in Oo Antawa Oo Oo Antawa raises whistles, to no one's surprise.

With all said and done, Pushpa: The Rise is all about Allu Arjun's performance. He shines in the role of this rustic character who is tough on the surface but is vulnerable in ways others don't. Allu Arjun fans might be happy to see him shake his legs briefly with numbers like Sami Sami and Ei Bidda Idi Na Adda, but he really shines when he does fast-paced fights, Peter Hain, Ram-Laxman choreograph some beautiful action sequences or when he constantly brushes him off for calling Coolie Oda Knowing he's too good for whatever others stereotype him to be. It also gives him a chance to showcase his acting chops apart from his hard-earned dialect, which sometimes makes you laugh when he shoulders a big film like this
